Who Is Adam Driver?
Adam Driver is a famous actor who is originally from California. He was born in San Diego in 1983 and grew up in a religious environment.
His biological father is a preacher, while his stepfather is a church minister.
His interest in acting began in high school when he took part in school plays. After school, he planned to pursue an acting career further and applied to the prestigious Juilliard.
He wasn’t accepted, and during his late teenage years, which were spent in Indiana, he had no clear direction in life. For Driver, he got a firmer idea of his next steps following the horrific events of 9/11.
He felt, as he explains in a TED Talk, “an overwhelming sense of duty.” The young Driver decided to join the marines, which he reflects on fondly.
“I loved it, firing weapons was cool, driving and detonating expensive things was great,” he recalls.
Driver’s military career came to an end after he sustained an injury. The effects of his medical dischargement were difficult for him mentally, as he felt that he had let down his comrades.
Following his departure from the military, Driver again decided to pursue acting. He enrolled in the University of Indianapolis before again attempting to gain a place at Juilliard.
After his second application, he was accepted into the school and after his graduation, he began to grab acting roles.
His debut TV role came in 2009, and shortly after, he began appearing on Broadway. Just two years after his first TV gig, he grabbed the role of Adam Sackler in ‘Girls’, the TV series starring Lena Dunham.
This would become a breakout role that was recognized by the Emmy awards.
In 2012, he starred in the movie ‘Lincoln’. His first appearance in the ‘Star Wars’ movies came in 2015, when he played Kylo Ren, a role he later reprised in ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ and ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’.
In 2019, he starred alongside Scarlett Johansson in the Netflix movie ‘Marriage Story’.
The fame that comes with such prominent movie roles has not changed Driver, though, he told the Guardian. “As a person, I’m the same,” he says, “For me, the only noticeable difference is your visibility as a person. Loss of anonymity is a big thing.”
In the movie ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, Driver appears shirtless in one scene, where he doesn’t appear to have any tattoos. The scene attracted a lot of attention, and the movie’s director, Rian Johnson, claimed that Driver put a lot of preparation into looking great for the movie.
“He’s been training hardcore for the past six months,” she says.
Though partially nude scenes could be awkward for some actors, they’re something that Driver is familiar with. When he appeared in the TV series ‘Girls’, he regularly appeared without a shirt, where again, there was no sign of any skin inkings.
Driver’s time in the military may also have impacted his decision on whether to get a tattoo. The military has strict rules on whether serving marines can have tattoos.
The rules were loosened in 2016, but there are still high standards that are expected of servicemen. The content of any tattoos must be deemed appropriate.
Specifically, marines are not allowed to have tattoos that “express sexism, nudity, racism, vulgarity, or anything that is offensive and is of nature to bring discredit to the Marine Corps or damage the nation’s expectations of them.”
Marines are also not permitted to have tattoos, regardless of their nature, which are visible when they’re wearing their uniforms. They are “prohibited from getting tattoos on the head, neck, inside the mouth, wrists, knees, elbows, and hands with the exception of a single band tattoo of no more than three-eights of an inch in width on one finger.”
