By any measure, female rapper Cardi B has launched a successful career. Her song, “Bodak Yellow,” became the longest reigning chart topper on the Hot 100 from an unaccompanied female rapper.
Cardi B does write her own songs and lyrics, but she has some help with the hooks and editing process that has brought her such success. Still, Cardi B claims she writes most of her own songs and lyrics on her own.
Cardi B has more to say about how she goes about writing her own lyrics in this interview, which can be seen by using the YouTube link below.
Cardi B Expresses Herself through Music
As a child of two parents who immigrated to America, growing up only a few miles away from the one of the richest cities in the United States, Cardi B learned early that she had to have a strong work ethic if she wanted to get to the top.
Her first commercial single, “Bodak Yellow,” was released in June 2017 and became well known by people across the world. In fact, the rap song earned Cardi B her first nomination at the 60th Grammy Awards.
At the BET Hip Hop Awards in 2017 alone, Cardi B won five trophies. Some of these awards include Best New Hip Hop Artist and Hustler of the Year.
She wrote “Bodak Yellow,” like many other songs, about her work ethic and her desire to climb to the top of the charts. In that sense, she has attained her goal.
With that work ethic, it does not look like Cardi B will be done writing music anytime soon. And, from her humble upbringing in the South Bronx, she is motivated to share her newfound wealth from becoming such a massive success.
In the Instagram post linked below, you can see a recent video posted by Cardi B, sending money to her beloved followers and fans.
Cardi B does write her own songs and lyrics, but some have questioned her in the past.
As number 7 on Billboard’s top Hot 100 songwriters in 2018, Cardi B took offense to the allegations and spoke out to defend herself in interviews and on Twitter.
Her original tweet has since been deleted, but Cardi B commented that she has other collaborators on her album who help her with hooks. However, she writes a bulk of the content on the album.
Nevertheless, Cardi B has never claimed to do it all on her own. The co-writers on her Grammy winning album, Invasion of Privacy, have been credited on every track.
With or without co-writers, it is safe to say that Cardi B has gone on an impressive run. She continues to collaborate with other artists, including Offset of Migos–who is now her husband–and Bruno Mars, to produce top hits aside from her own music.
Keeping us all on the edge of our seats, Cardi B has announced that her new music is coming. It will be an exciting moment for all of us to see just how much more successful this female rapper can become.
