Demi Lovato is a major star on the pop music scene. Lovato has released six albums and numerous hit songs, but fans might be wondering if Demi Lovato writes her own songs.
Demi Lovato does write many of her own songs. Though the songstress does have a team of songwriters and producers when working on an album, Lovato has taken an active role in penning some of her top hits.
Read more below about Demi Lovato’s rise to fame and the pop sensation’s songwriting process.
Small Screen Success to Songwriter Supreme
Demi Lovato has been a staple on the pop music scene for over a decade, but she was gracing the small screens of households long before that. Lovato grew up in the public eye, starring as Angela on the children’s show, Barney and Friends.
After that, Demi Lovato became a Disney Channel mainstay, starring in multiple shows and made-for-tv movies, alongside the likes of The Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus. It was during this time that Lovato signed a deal with Hollywood Records and released her first album, Don’t Forget, in the fall of 2008.
Hollywood Record execs were shocked by Demi’s vocal talent, with Hollywood Records senior vice president, Bob Cavallo, recalling, “Our jaws just dropped.” Little did the production team know that Lovato’s talents extended far beyond her vocal range.
Not only had Lovato taken piano and guitar lessons as a kid, but she had also been honing her songwriting skills, bringing her writing prowess center stage while making her first album.
During an interview with Stephen Colbert, Demi discussed songwriting with Nick Jonas on her debut album, noting one of the songs was about Nick’s older brother, Joe Jonas, who had broken the singer’s heart. Of that awkward moment, Lovato recalled, “I was writing my first album and writing a song called ‘Gonna Get Caught,’ and he was in the room. We were all writing together, and he was like maybe it has a happy ending ya know? I was like no! I think he gets caught and everybody sees he’s a heartbreaker.”
A More Mature Muse
Though Lovato’s first album may have been focused on the plights of teenage romance, Lovato tends to write about whatever is on her mind, saying, “My writing process is going into the studio and either having something to say and telling who I’m writing with, ‘Hey, this is what I want to write about. I have to get this off my chest.’ That’s kind of how we start the song, and also trying to personalize it as much as possible.”

Since then Demi Lovato has released six studio albums and has a seventh album expected to be released in 2020. Due to the personal struggles the star has faced, Lovato’s work has become more mature and personal over the years, with Lovato taking to social media to discuss the new album, saying, “You know what’s great about making an album? You get to say anything you want, be as open and honest as possible, and finally tell your side of the story regardless of who might not like it.”
Despite Lovato’s desire to be as honest as possible, the singer admits writing songs about other people is hard, especially when she knows the other person might hear it, during a live session with MTV, telling the audience, “And you never want the person you wrote about to hear that song and feel bad. I never want that to happen.”
Inspiration for the Future
Unlike many other pop acts of today, Lovato is the all around package, with songwriting skills to back up her powerhouse vocals. Though she might not have written every song she’s ever recorded, Demi Lovato is credited as a writer on over 50 songs since her first album debuted, which is a big feat for someone still in their twenties, and fans certainly have much to look forward to when Lovato’s newest album drops.
