Justin Bieber is arguably one of the most remarkably successful singers in the music industry. After being discovered by RBMG Records and signing with them at the tender age of 14, Bieber made history when he became the first singer to have seven tracks from his debut album appear on Billboard 100. But is he the one putting the thought into the lyrics that he transforms into dance worthy hits; does Bieber write his songs?
Justin Bieber writes some of his songs, sometimes by himself while other times he collaborates with other famed singers including Ludacris, Nicki Minaj and Zedd to produce his chart topping hits. He has co-written at least 51 of his songs, working alongside the likes of the musician, Skrillex, and actress and producer, Julia Roberts, to compose his heavily streamed Spotify hit ‘Sorry’.
Are you a belieber or just a normal person with a burning desire to find out more about Bieber’s journey into fame? Well, you’re in for a treat as you can dive deeper into how his exquisite voice turned him into a pop sensation by reading on.
From ‘Baby’ to Worldwide Pop Sensation
In May 2020, 12 years into his career, it was reported by Pop Crave via Twitter that Justin Bieber had joined the sensational songstress, Mariah Carey, and ‘Hotline Bling’ rapper, Drake, as the only artist in history to have three singles debut at the chart-topping number one position on Billboard’s Hot 100.
Perhaps Bieber was always destined to make chart history with his mind blowing, electrifying musical compositions. All things considered, Bieber most definitely took the industry by storm with his never ending talent, especially considering that he made history with his music even at the start of his career – he just kept on coming with more great tunes from there.
One of the most recognizable hits from the beginning of his career is ‘Baby’, released as part of his debut chart-topping album My World 2.0 (which I’m sure all you beliebers can recite off the top of your head!). From listening to the introductory verse, it’s abundantly clear that it’s a love song as the then 15-year-old recites: “You are my love, you are my heart / And we will never, ever, ever be apart.”
As the song progresses, Bieber narrates the heartbreak of losing his first love with whom he thought he’d have by his side forever. Clearly, when you’re young and are none the wiser, you think the platonic ‘love’ you feel for another will last the entirety of your long life, but of course, your world comes crashing down when it doesn’t, and this is precisely what Bieber recounts in the song.
Not all of his songs are about heartbreak and about loving others though. As the pop star grew older, his musical content became more mature too.
In the popular hit, ‘I’ll Show You’, Bieber recounts what it’s like growing up with all eyes on you, having the public gaze centered on you, while only craving one simple necessity: human connection. Bieber recalls the challenges of being in the public eye from such a young age near to the beginning of the song, where he vocalizes: “Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing / When the pressure’s coming down like lightning / It’s like they want me to be perfect / When they don’t even know that I’m hurting.”
For Bieber, it has been a rocky ride even though he has probably achieved every singer’s dream in his career by making history multiple times, but despite the bumps in the road, Bieber still loves to put on a show for his fans and perhaps that’s one reason amongst many others for why he’s such a substantial pop music figure in the history of pop singers.
