They’ve had their fair share of time on the big screen, and spent five years in a relationship together, but how did they meet?
The origins of Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy’s relationship remain unknown, and ultimately mysterious. Little is known about how the zany and humorous Carrey met – and fell into a relationship with – bombshell ex-Playboy model McCarthy.
Read on to learn more about the Hollywood pair and their five-year romance.
Sense of Humor
It may seem like a bizarre pairing at first glance, but allegedly a good sense of humor always wins a woman over. Jim Carrey boasts humor in spades, and always has. His career as a comedian and actor started out way back in the late seventies, when he experimented with stand-up comedy.
It would be over a decade before Jenny McCarthy found fame, working as a model in 1993. It was here where she ended up in Playboy magazine. She’d ultimately become Playmate of the Month in October 1993, using her looks and confidence to gain success.
McCarthy used that very same confidence to gain inroads into television, and presenting. Throughout the nineties, she hosted various reality TV shows, and also experimented with movies. By the time McCarthy had completed her first movie, Carrey had starred in almost fifteen.
You can see a trailer below, showing Carrey as the lead in one of his most famous movies: Liar Liar.
Assumedly, while the two may have known the other existed, there’s no record of McCarthy and Carrey meeting this early on. While they worked on their respective careers, they never crossed paths.
However, in 2006, the pair came out and suddenly announced they were dating. It seemed that the sense of humor had won through, and showed success for Carrey. Also in 2006, an article referenced this fact, stating that: “Even bombshell Jenny McCarthy found her match with the always unpredictable Jim Carrey.”
Apparently, the two had started dating in 2005, keeping the relationship quiet for months before revealing it. The two had previously been married to other people, but had separated from their respective partners. They also both had children from these previous marriages.
Status Quo
The pair made it well known that they had no intentions to marry one another. It was a misconception that the two were married, however. In a later interview, Carrey said about their relationship: “No, we’re never getting married, but we’re never getting divorced, which is fantastic.”
They were apparently happy just staying in a relationship, not moving forward or backwards. However, by 2010, it would all come to a head. Reportedly, the break-up was sudden, and seemingly without reason. There was a string of speculation throughout the press, of course.
In an interview in 2010, on Oprah, Jenny McCarthy was well and truly put on the spot. The world-famous talk show host asked her when she knew the relationship was over. In response, McCarthy revealed that the relationship had stopped being fun. It had allegedly “lost its luster.”
While they were the ‘perfect Hollywood couple’, it seemed things weren’t destined to last. They were poles apart in terms of attitude and personality. In the years following their split, tensions began mounting between the ex-couple.
Reportedly, Carrey had turned his back on McCarthy and her autistic son. In a way, Carrey had taken her son, Evan, under his arm as a step-relative. Once the relationship had ended, however, he allegedly dismissed the boy entirely.
McCarthy took to the airwaves to denounce and condemn this action entirely, causing further strain between the two. By 2020, the two had fully and totally distanced. They were each working on their own respective careers and productions once again, and showed no sign of reconciliation.
Jim Carrey retained his zany and bizarre persona, particularly on social media. He was never far from another unexpected or inexplicable tweet, or image.
