Justin Bieber has been in the public eye since his entrance to the music and entertainment industries back in 2007. Is this star another famous vegan?
Justin Bieber went vegan for a short period of time, but did not maintain the diet. Bieber did not adjust well to being vegan, facing changes to both his mood and his health, so he decided to go back to eating animal products.
Read more below to find out about Bieber’s experience as a vegan, his diet now, his shared interest with vegan activists, and how he has participated in animal rights movements.
Bieber’s Diet
Usher, Justin Bieber’s longtime mentor, is one of the celebrities who switched to a plant-based diet back in 2012. Usher had been encouraging Bieber to go vegan as well, convinced that it was the healthiest way to live, and would keep Bieber’s energy up for his busy touring schedule.
For a time in 2012, Bieber did go vegan because of Usher’s suggestion. While he kept up the plant-based diet, he did struggle with having lower energy and feeling sick, which can happen when someone doesn’t get enough of the nutrients that they need.
It also caused his mood to plummet. Veganism is not for everyone, and it seems like Bieber did not adjust well to the diet, and he also got sick on stage during the opening night of his Believe tour.
Addressing his sickness on Twitter after the show, he posted this tweet which reads, “And… Milk was a bad choice! Lol.” Perhaps he’d decided to return to having animal products, which would explain the milk, but his body was having a hard time readjusting.
While Bieber may not have had a great time going fully vegan, he still has vegan meals from time to time. In 2017, he and Selena Gomez were seen eating breakfast at JOi Café, an organic and vegan restaurant based in California.
Now, Bieber’s diet is not strictly plant-based, but he does still try to eat healthily. He mainly sticks to salads, veggies, salmon, chicken, and rice dishes, but will also not restrict himself if he wants to eat a burger or something sweet.
Bieber also drinks lots of water throughout the day, and maintains a rigorous workout routine for five to six days a week, including cardio, weight training, and boxing. He also sometimes does yoga with his wife, Hailey Baldwin.
Baldwin isn’t vegan either, but after eating at Monty’s Good Burger, a vegan fast-food place based in Los Angeles, she may change her mind. “I am not vegan or vegetarian,” she began in a post on her Instagram story, “BUT I will say over the last week or so I have tried some of the most unbelievable vegan food I’ve ever had, and I want to keep exploring plant based!”
Her purchase included three vegan burgers, two vegan milkshakes, fries, and tater tots. “These milkshakes were so good I couldn’t believe they had no dairy,” she wrote.
Animal Rights Movements
Bieber has also been involved in creating vegan and cruelty-free options for different products. In 2019, Bieber and Schmidt’s Naturals teamed up to create a vegan deodorant called Here + Now.
The deodorant is completely cruelty-free and boasts natural ingredients like coconut oil and arrowroot powder. As the co-founder and CEO of Schmidt’s Naturals, Michael Cammarata, said, “If Justin can make the switch from conventional to natural, it’s a choice that’s open to everyone.”
Bieber also started his own fashion line, which is also completely vegan. Named Drew House after Bieber’s middle name, the line is all about comfort and features a stylized smiley face on the brand.
With sweatshirts and t-shirts from bright colors to more neutral shades, the line quickly sold out just hours after its launch back in 2018.
