Demi Lovato is one of the biggest pop music acts in the world. Having taken her image from squeaky clean Disney Channel teen star to a sexy songstress who regularly makes tabloid headlines for her personal exploits, some might be wondering what, if any, religion is Demi Lovato?
Demi Lovato is a Christian. Though her spiritual beliefs have seen highs and lows over the past decade, Lovato has always been willing to discuss her religion and how it’s impacted her life.
Read more below about Lovato’s religious upbringing, her multiple tattoos referencing her beliefs, and how she remains spiritual in the spotlight.
Demi Lovato has been in the spotlight since she was a child star, first working on Barney and Friends and then moving on to fame with multiple shows and Disney Channel Original movies before signing a record deal and rising to superstardom. Despite growing up in a Christian household, Lovato fell victim to many of the pitfalls of child stardom, including bullying, an eating disorder, and mental health and addiction issues.
However, Lovato has always credited God with helping her through her trying times and helping to shape her career. During an interview on Ashley Graham’s podcast, Lovato said, “You’re not supposed to do this, but I made this pact with God. I was much younger and I was just like look, ‘God like if you make me famous, if you make me a singer and give me Grammys and stuff I will do your work.’”
Realizing that she needed to hold up her end of the bargain, Lovato has always been very open in discussing her struggles. From a young age Demi dealt with bullying from classmates due to her career, which ultimately became so bad that Lovato begged her mom to be homeschooled.
Since that time, Lovato has been vocally outspoken against bullying, and involved with multiple other charitable causes.
Regardless of her ability to give back, during the height of her fame, Lovato was dealing with personal demons, battling a drug addiction and an eating disorder. Lovato completed multiple trips to rehab, with the singer telling E!, “I lived fast and I was going to die young,” she said. “I didn’t think I would make it to 21.”
However, Lovato credits God with helping her through her struggles with addiction. After her near-fatal overdose in 2018, Lovato began attending church again after many years.
During an interview Lovato described how she had stayed away from church for many years, because she did not feel welcome due to the lifestyle she was leading, noting, “I tried to seek God through other experiences, whether that’s through other relationships or substances. And it’s just like, I had to realize that the God that I’m seeking, the God that I love and the God that I want to be my God is available 24/7, always at an arm’s length and constantly with me.I need to focus on myself and my relationship with myself and my relationship with God.”
Lovato’s manager, Scooter Braun, found her a church to attend in the Los Angeles area that Demi feels accepts her for who she is no matter what. Lovato has been photographed attending church services with fellow pop sensation, Justin Bieber, and his wife, Hailey Baldwin.
Demi Lovato also recently took a trip to Israel, where she took in the sights and experienced so many of the places she had learned about in the Bible, and also had herself baptized while there. Lovato took to Instagram to share a snap of the baptism and her love of Israel, explaining that she had some Jewish heritage.
The singer closed off her social media posts, writing, “This trip has been so important for my well-being, my heart, and my soul. I’m grateful for the memories made and the opportunity to be able to fill the God-sized hole in my heart. Thank you for having me, Israel.”
In addition to attending church and making spiritual treks, Lovato is also known for her numerous tattoos, some of which are religious in nature, including a cross on the side of her hand, the word “faith,” and an angel being carried by doves. The latter was Lovato’s most recent tattoo, which she helped design, and signified what Lovato considers her rebirth.
Though it’s safe to say Demi Lovato’s personal life has experienced great highs and lows, it’s clear her spiritual beliefs have remained steadfast through everything.
