You can read more below about Emma Watson’s football fandom and her involvement in the UK teams 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup reveal.
Chelsea FC and the Premier League
Chelsea FC is a team that is run out of Fulham, London, England and was founded all the way back in 1905. They are historically one of England’s most successful football clubs, not only are they one of only two clubs to successfully stay in the Premier League since its inception in 1995, they have won the UEFA Champions League title.
In order to understand how that is, you must understand how the UK’s football leagues work. The Premier League is the top league in England where the twenty best teams compete for the title of champion. The top four teams in the league go on to compete in the international tournament known as the Champions League against other European teams. The bottom three teams are relegated into the level 2 league.
The level 2 league is known as the English Football League Championship. The top two teams in the League Championship are promoted to the Premier League. The third vacant spot is given to the team from the Championship who wins a round robin tournament with the next four highest teams in the Championship. The system works this way with 8 leagues in total.
As stated above, Chelsea FC is one of only six teams to have never been relegated from the Premier League. The other five teams are Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Everton, and Tottenham. Historically, Chelsea is the third best performing English team having won the Champions League in 2012. Liverpool FC is the English team with the best performance history having won the Champions league six times with Manchester United FC following with three wins.
Emma Watson at Chelsea Games
Photos of Emma Watson attending Chelsea games started surfacing back in 2009 when she attended a game with the owner, Roman Abramovich, and his wife, Dasha Zukhovah. Although how big of a fan Watson is of the team is not known. With her busy schedule and interests in reading, fashion, and yoga, she’s probably not the type to be spewing out player stats.
One of her co-stars from the film Little Women is also a Chelsea fan. In March 2020, Vogue UK reported that Timothee Chalamet is now a Chelsea fan after spending time in London for an upcoming theatre production. Chalamet played the role of Theodore “Laurie” Laurence in Little Women; Watson played Meg March.
Watson’s Support of Lionesses
Outside of the Premier League, Watson has shown her support for England’s 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Team dubbed Lionesses. As part of a very progressive ad campaign, the team had different celebrities announce the team members.
Emma Watson was joined by celebrities like David Beckam, Prince William, Anne Marie, and Olly Murs, in announcing the women who had earned their place on the team’s roster. The team competed from the 7th of June to the 7th of July in France. Although Lionesses didn’t win, they did finish fourth overall in the tournament. Unfortunately, one spot below a medal winning position.
